Write My Essay For Me- What are the differences between physical and chemical properties in chemistry?
- What are the differences between physical and chemical reactions in chemistry?
- What are the characteristics that make elements different from compounds? Give two examples of each that exist in the human body and explain their function.
Discussion Question 2
Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research any one element. On the basis of your research, provide:
- What are isotopes and how are isotopes distinguished from one another?
- How can isotopes be used in medicine (be specific)? Describe in detail one example of how an isotope is used therapeutically, and describe another example of how an isotope is used diagnostically in medicine.
Sample Solution
Discussion Question 1:
Physical properties refer to characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s chemical composition. Some examples of physical properties include color, density, melting point, boiling point, and solubility. Chemical properties, on the other hand, describe a substance’s behavior when it undergoes a chemical change or reaction. These properties include reactivity, flammability, and toxicity, among others.
Physical reactions involve a change in the physical state of a substance, such as melting, boiling, or freezing. These changes do not alter the substance’s chemical composition. Chemical reactions, on the other hand, involve the breaking and forming of chemical bonds between atoms, leading to the creation of new substances with different chemical properties.
Elements are pure substances that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. They are characterized by their unique atomic number and chemical properties. Compounds, on the other hand, are made up of two or more elements that are chemically bonded together. The properties of a compound are different from those of the individual elements that make it up. Two examples of elements in the human body are carbon and oxygen, which are essential for life. Carbon is a component of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats, while oxygen is necessary for respiration. Two examples of compounds in the human body are water and sodium chloride. Water is essential for many biochemical reactions in the body, while sodium chloride (table salt) is involved in many physiological processes, including maintaining fluid balance and transmitting nerve impulses.
Discussion Question 2:
Isotopes are atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Isotopes of an element have the same atomic number but different atomic masses. Isotopes can be distinguished from one another by their atomic mass or the number of neutrons in their nuclei.
Isotopes can be used in medicine for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. One example of a therapeutic use of isotopes is in radiation therapy, where high-energy radiation is used to destroy cancer cells. Radioactive isotopes such as iodine-131 and palladium-103 are used in this type of treatment. Iodine-131 is used to treat thyroid cancer, while palladium-103 is used to treat prostate cancer.
Another example of the diagnostic use of isotopes is in nuclear medicine imaging. Radioactive isotopes are used to create images of the body’s internal organs and tissues. One commonly used isotope in this type of imaging is technetium-99m, which is used in over 40 million diagnostic…NEED A COMPREHENSIVE ANSWER? POST YOUR ORDER
