Skin Characteristics and Relationship to Friction Ridges Impressions

Fingerprints are a result of the impressions that are created by the friction ridges of a human or primate skin. These resistance bridges are found on the human palm, fingers and at the bottom of our feet. The friction bridges’ primary role is to help the primates to get hold of objects hence the term. When the friction bridges comes into contact with an object, the skin deposits wastes like sweat and other contaminants to the object it comes into contact. The impression left behind is the same as the surface of the skin that touched the surface. A latent print refers to print that cannot be seen by the naked eye, but it does exist (Senior & Bolle, 2001). During fetal development, in the fourth month to be precise, the fingerprints get distinguished. Throughout the person’s life and until that individual dies and his body decomposes, the distinct traits of the friction ridges do not change.
