Audience demographic should be taken into consideration when giving a speech because depending on who the audience is their outlook on certain topics could be different. You should know about your audience in order to figure out how you will get as well as keep their attention throughout the speech. Demographic audience analysis pertains to characteristics such as age, religion, gender, etc. Should you have a speech where the topic be in relation to men and women and the way they are treated in the work place you would go about presenting your ideas differently if your audience is a group of women rather than a group of men. The other type of audience analysis is situational, and these may or may not be something you can control such as the placement the speech is taking place, how people feel about the person giving the speech, or even how they feel about the topic itself. For instance, at the airport that I work we have to teach class to all new employees regarding the security of the airport. Now the demographic of the audience in each class ranges drastically whether it be age or race. However, when teaching the class, I relate the security of the airport to the safety of people’s homes. Saul Alinsky stated, “People only understand things in terms of their experience” (Lucas, 2007). Therefore, I try to get them to see a relation in what they do at home and how for the most part it is the same here at the airport except more secure. In order to give a good speech, you have to appeal to your reader so that they can take away from your speech what you want them to.
