A 36-year old Hispanic male with no past medical history came to the emergency department with one day of chronic abdominal pain. She stated that the day before, she developed diffuse, vague abdominal discomfort. She lost her appetite and slept earlier than normal because of secondary malaise. On the day of the visit to the clinic, the pain became worse in intensity, became sharp, and localized to the right lower quadrant.
The patient’s vital signs were normal. Upon examination, she was focally tender to palpation in the right lower quadrant with voluntary guarding. Palpation of the left lower quadrant was reproducing pain on the right. Lab work was remarkable with the exception of a mild leukocytosis. The patient was diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
