Overview

First, read chapters 14 and 15, in your textbook, Transcultural Concepts in Nursing Care.  Links to these chapters can be found by clicking on the instructional material folder and then required reading folder for this module.

2. Discuss the cultural underpinnings supporting pros and cons of health care reform and the Affordable Care Act in the United States.
3. Explain how the principles of social justice and human rights protection reduce health disparities.

People from different ethnicity, religion, cultural, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds have diverse perceptions and understanding of health issues. Understanding patient’s culture, values and beliefs is important in ensuring better healthcare outcomes. Patients become more responsive when nurses recognize, respect and incorporate their cultural beliefs and practices in treatment impartially, even if they do not correspond with their professional practice. Health needs of the diverse patient population will be fulfilled by a more culturally receptive nursing training and practice.
