Understand is fundamental to the role of command. Commanders in the Army must understand the problem, operational environment, and the enemy. Commanders gain understanding by using PMESII-PT (Political, Military, Economic, Social, Information, Infrastructure, Physical Environment, and Time) and IPB (Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield). PMESII-PT helps the Commander understand the mission. IPB helps the commander understand the enemy. Education, experience, and perception are factors that determine the commander’s depth of understanding.
